About Us

Our community of members are at the heart of The Commons. We make every decision at each of our spaces with careful consideration of the individuals who spend their days there, our members. Being surrounded by a diverse and supportive community is the key to personal and professional success. The Commons is a B Corp Certified membership-based creative workspace that provides an environment that allows people to connect, collaborate, and grow.

Our Story

The Commons concept was created in Melbourne by two Australian schoolmates, Cliff and Tom. They came together with a desire to change how Australians worked, achieve happiness in the workplace, and redefine the meaning of a day at the office. With thoughtful consideration of what helps individuals thrive, the founders created a space with a harmonious collaboration of the flexibility of today's work style and the needs of the modern individual.

How We Got Here

Where It began

In 2016, we opened our inaugural location in Collingwood, Melbourne. Built from the hands of our founders Cliff and Tom, they used empty shipping containers, filled them with simple materials, shared workspaces, and welcomed our first members.

Opened Our Second Location

In 2017, we opened our second location in South Melbourne, known for their restored chic boutiques, cafés and restaurants.

Addressed Our Environmental Impact

With gratitude for our success, 2019 was a big year for The Commons.
We opened our first Melbourne CBD location. Consequently, we expanded our reach and opened our first Sydney location, The Commons Chippendale.
After three years in business, we decided to prioritise our greater impact on the environment. So we invested in renewable energy to offset the carbon emissions of our 4 locations.

Learning To Adapt

In 2020, we opened our largest Melbourne location in Cremorne, a tech hub. Although 2020 was a challenging year for everyone, we learned how to adapt to the changing work landscape while supporting our team and our members.

Receiving Two Noteworthy Certifications

In 2021, we launched our sister brand, Central House, in collaboration with APSO and Deague Group. Central House is an executive workspace for professionals looking for a customary experience. This same year, we also opened our South Yarra location, and were honoured to become B Corp Certified and Great Place to Work Certified.

Opened Our 9th Location And Ventured Into Hospitality

In 2022, we enjoyed a great year of growth. We opened two new locations in Sydney with The Commons George Street and Surry Hills. Both sites are joined with Commons Coffee to better serve our members as we venture into the world of hospitality. At the same time, we had our second location in Collingwood join us with The Commons Wellington Street, designed by Flack Studio. This year, we welcomed over 3500 new and over 35 team members, doubling our growing team.

Opening our first Cafe in Melbourne

In 2023, we opened our first Commons Coffee here in Melbourne, occupying the entire ground floor of our Wellington Street location. This Commons Coffee, doubles as a reading room to create a unique dining experience for both our members and the public.
As we continue to grow, so does our sister brands. Central House has opened its second location with Central House Toorak, expanding it reach to the prestigious neighbourhood and providing additional locations for our members to work from.
